What really is a Pilgrimage?

Updated: May 29, 2023

Wikipedia defines a pilgrimage as:

The origins of the Camino de Santiago date back to the 9th century when the remains of St. James were believed to have been discovered in Santiago de Compostela.

In recent years, the Camino de Santiago has attracted pilgrims from all over the world, regardless of religious affiliation. People embark on this journey for a variety of reasons, including spiritual growth, physical challenge, cultural exploration, or personal reflection. It offers a unique opportunity for individuals to disconnect from their daily lives, connect with nature, and engage with fellow pilgrims from different backgrounds.

To me, you are still completing this personal, physical and mental journey regardless of how you choose to complete it. Regardless of where you might be staying, the extra clothes you might have in your suitcase, or the fact you’ve booked ahead, this physical and personal transformation can be the same as those who are letting each day decide for themselves with only the clothes in their pack.

Whilst it’s nice to not have to think about what to wear each day, I’d much rather not have to worry about spending my afternoons washing my only change of clothes each day and be able to soak up the culture of every new town.

Don’t let others opinions or beliefs on how a Camino should be completed hold you back. At the end of the day it’s your Camino.

Buen Camino xx
